چکیده

This paper describes a procedure grouping streamflow patterns across Turkey that exhibit similar annual flow behaviors. Streamflow information is the integrated response of the river basin, such as topography, soil and vegetation to external impacts such as climate. A regionalization of annual data is carried out using k-means analysis. Streamflow series from 80 gauging stations were chosen to characterize geographic differences in year to year streamflow variability. The eight-cluster solutions of k-means analysis are stable and interpretable with reference to spatial and temporal variations. It was shown that western Turkey is dominated by a relatively large cluster, indicating strong influences of the Mediterranean dynamics. The resultant map was given at the 8cluster level, showing the spatial variability of homogeneous streamflow regions. 1 Hydraulic Division Civil Engineering Department Istanbul Technical University 34469 Maslak Istanbul, Turkey Tel: (212) 285-3002 e-mail: [email protected]

Comparison of rotated and unrotated principal components of Turkish streamflow

We recently defined systematic modes of spatial and temporal variation in a 372-month record of streamflow using the principal components analysis (PCA). The unrotated and orthogonally rotated (varimax) components were previously calculated from a matrix of monthly streamflow records of 78 stations in Turkey for the period 1964-1994. As a result, the basic anomaly patterns by the unrotated comp...

Effects of winter atmospheric circulation on temporal and spatial variability in annual streamflow in the western United States

Winter mean 700-hectoPascal (hPa) height anomalies, representing the average atmospheric circulation during the snow season, are compared with annual streamflow measured at 140 streamgauges in the western United States. Correlation and anomaly pattern analyses are used to identify relationships between winter mean atmospheric circulation and temporal and spatial variability in annual streamflow...

Analysis of inter-decade changes in trends and spatial patterns of annual and seasonal precipitation, case study: West of Iran

The present research about the spatial changes of precipitation is mainly focused on western areas of Iran. Precipitation data for three seasons of fall, winter, and spring have been obtained from Esafzari Database, with 15*15 km spatial resolution in the form of a Lambert Cone Image System for the period from 1986 to 2015. To examine the prevailing pattern of precipitation in west of Iran, we ...

A step increase in streamflow in the conterminous United States

[1] Annual minimum, median, and maximum daily streamflow for 400 sites in the conterminous United States (U.S.), measured during 1941 – 1999, were examined to identify the temporal and spatial character of changes in streamflow statistics. Results indicate a noticeable increase in annual minimum and median daily streamflow around 1970, and a less significant mixed pattern of increases and decre...

Hydrologic Alterations Predicted by Seasonally-Consistent Subset Ensembles of General Circulation Models

Future climate forcing data at the temporal and spatial scales needed to drive hydrologic models are not readily available. Simple methods to derive these data from historical data or General Circulation Model (GCM) results may not adequately capture future hydrological variability. This study assessed streamflow response to daily future climate forcing data produced by a new method using subse...
